Thousands of residents of Ilaje community in Bariga, Lagos on Saturday benefited from the magnanimity of Glo Foundation, an initiative of data solutions provider, Globacom, as it shared boxes of food and other essential items to the community.
The Foundation had collaborated with the Lagos Food Bank in the determination to combat food insecurity in Nigeria.
The impressive food packs contained Rice, Garri, Spaghetti, noodles, tomato paste, tooth brushes, sardines, salt, vegetable oil, and seasoning cubes and marked the commencement of a nationwide food initiative by the Foundation to support hundreds of thousands of Nigerians in several states of the Federation.
The food packs were distributed to the less-privileged in association with the Lagos Food Bank, at the Love Lagos Jetty in Bariga. The thoughtful initiative brought joy and laughter to beneficiaries comprising mainly of women.
The jubilant beneficiaries sang and danced in celebration of Glo Foundation’s gesture saying it was a welcome development considering the prevailing economic situation in the country.
Head of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) at Globacom, Mrs. Adejumobi Mofe-Damijo at the event underscored the Foundation’s readiness to alleviate the suffering of families adding that the gesture would be extended to other parts of the country.
Said she, “Glo Foundation would undertake series of interventions that would bear positive impact on different sectors of the society in tandem with its vision of empowerment and care for the less-privileged”.
Mofe-Damijo further thanked the staff of Globacom for making the initiative a success through their support and culture of giving which have boosted the efforts of the Lagos Food Bank Initiative.
On his own part, the Executive Director of Lagos Food Bank Initiative, Michael Sunbola, lauded Globacom for its huge investment in the food distribution project and called on other corporate organizations to be part of the drive to reduce food insecurity in the country.
“We are happy to collaborate with Globacom on this. This is the pilot phase and other parts of the country will also benefit from the drive aimed at touching the lives of the real underprivileged in the society”, he said.
The Glo Foundation train is scheduled to arrive at another Lagos community next Saturday to repeat the giving gesture.
The Ilaje-Bariga community beneficiaries were full of appreciation to Glo Foundation for the food intervention and the various other items in the packs given to them.
Abiola Oladunjoye, an unemployed woman in the community, noted that the food pack from the Foundation was divine provision for her. “I really appreciate. May the Almighty continue to protect the company and may it continue to grow. I pray for more success for you all and the company itself for remembering us here.”.
