HOW EBONYLIFE PROMOTED THE LAGOS ART COMMUNITY WITH EKO CULTURE

Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture in collaboration with EbonyLife Place, successfully hosted EkoCulture, a grand exhibition of remarkable Nigerian art to showcase the wealth of talent in the Lagos art community. The visual spectacle opened on Thursday 29th June and continued until Sunday 1st August 2021.

Thousands of art enthusiasts in Lagos witnessed the first of a kind display of stunning paintings, sculptures and fabrics, along with traditional drumming, singing and spoken word.

To create EkoCulture, curators from Nike Art Gallery selected the works of more than forty artists who work in a variety of media. The paintings and sculptures were displayed in the grand lobby of EbonyLife Place and in Victoria Hall, while giant artworks created from recycled metal dominated the colourful outdoor spaces on the poolside terrace.

Nigerian art is fast becoming a billion-dollar industry and EkoCulture is seeking to put the spotlight on budding Lagos artists, in an effort to bring more of their work into the mainstream.

It is the sixth of twelve-monthly events being staged by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, in partnership with EbonyLife Place, to highlight various aspects of arts and culture that have a significant impact on tourism and entertainment in Lagos.

Speaking about EkoCulture, the Hon. Commissioner, Mrs. Uzamat Akinbile-Yusuf, noted. “Lagos State generates billions of naira annually in art and craft, through galleries, auctions and markets. By promoting our local artists, we believe that Nigerians will begin to value them just as much as international buyers do.

This is another way to grow our economy while supporting these young artists and the art trade.”

EbonyLife Place CEO Mo Abudu also said, “We support great Nigerian artists like Gerald Chukwuma, by buying and displaying their amazing work. All of the rooms at White Orchid Hotel, our lobbies, restaurants and other parts of EbonyLifePlace feature beautiful works of art. Our partnership with Lagos State will provide yet another platform for these artists to show their undeniable talent.”

Featured artists at EkoCulture include: Kunle Adegborioye, Akeem Adeleke, Rotimi Akinniri, Samson Akinniri, Peju Alatise, Tolu Aliki, Duke Asidere, Owolabi Ayodele, Omovo Ayoola, Kehinde Balogun, Ndidi Dike.

Yusuf Durodola, Sam Ebohon, Uche Edochie, Segun Ekhase, Ndidi Emefiele, Tony Enebeli, Onyinye Ezennia, Aina Felix, Blessing Ibie, Omon Sophia Igbinovia, Rom Isichei, Peju Layiwola, Mavua Lessor, Bolaji Ogunwo, Nelson Okoh, Nike Okundaye.

Hamed Olatunbosun, Victor Osasuwa, Steven Osuchukwu, Damilade Otayemi, Sam Ovraiti, Smart Owie, Dara Ricketts, Uzoma Samuel, Salisu Taiwo and Tola Wewe.
