A frontline politician and 2019 Lagos gubernatorial hopeful on the platform of People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Engineer Adedeji Doherty has stated that PDP government in Lagos State will immediately reverse all anti-people’s policies come 2019 when the party is expected to take over the reign of governance from APC government.
The astute politician made the disclosure recently in a chat with Prestige International Magazine.
Among the policies he wants to be reversed is the recently reviewed Lagos Land Use Charge Policy, which has attracted mixed reactions from cross sections of the populace.
He also wants policies on Plate number fees, Vehicle license fees and Toll gate fees to be reversed with immediate effect. The governorship aspirant also expressed his dissatisfaction with the current tax policy of Lagos State government, which he termed as multiple in nature and not in the best interest of Lagosians.
Meanwhile, the Lagos State Government has explained that the recent increase in the land use charge would provide more resources to the state to provide social services and infrastructure to the benefit of the general public.
To increase its internally generated revenue and continue to expand its tax base, the state government recently repealed its 2001 Land Use Charge Law, and replaced this 2001 Law with a new Land Use Charge Law, 2018.
The state government also extended the period for the payment of all annual Land Use Charge, LUC, Demand Notices for 2018, to Saturday, April 14th, 2018. The latter is to enable Property Owners and affected occupiers take the option of enjoying the discounts available for the prompt and early payment of LUC invoices.
Controversy had trailed the review when the Organised Private Sector, OPS, rejected the newly passed UC Law, vowing to fight the law with every legal means at its disposal.
The OPS speaking through the Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association, NECA, posited that the new law would expect property owners in Lagos State to pay an increase of over 200 per cent in Land Use Charge even when the income of the property owner had not experienced significant increase to justify the charge.
Doherty in the same vein frown at the Lagos State Advertisement Signage Agency, (LASAA) policy. The agency is not new to controversy. Since the year 2006, when the then Lagos State Governor, Mr. Bola Tinubu, established the agency in the twilight of his administratio to regulate and control outdoor advertising and signage displays in the state, it has always moved from one controversy to the other.
Unfortunately, the situation has created more problems for practitioners who now contend with the challenge of multiple taxations.
To the operators, the establishment of LASAA was meant to cripple the outdoor sub sector of the advertising industry. Despite the intervention from stakeholders, including APCON, the association and the state agency have since continued to maintain a cat and mouse relationship.
On his contrary view on policy surrounding toll gates, it would be recalled that the Lekki Concession Company has released details of the new tolls to be paid by motorists using the Lekki-Epe Expressway and Ikoyi Link Bridge in Lagos.
It said in a statement obtained that drivers/owners of cars and tricycles driving on the Lekki-Epe Expressway would pay N200, a 66.6-per cent increase over the old rate of N120.
But the Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has condemned the increase.
Doherty also spoke against the policy of engaging foreign company to manage and run the local affairs of the state like the engagement of Visionscape, the foreign company that is currently managing waste across the state.
